Vashon Island School District Protocol for Intern and Student Teacher Placement
The Vashon Island School District supports the professional development of future educators and school professionals. This protocol outlines a standardized process for applying, screening, and placing student teachers and interns in certificated roles, including but not limited to teachers, counselors, social workers, nurses, psychologists, principals, program managers, and superintendents. The process ensures equity, consistency, and professionalism while safeguarding the student learning environment.
Procedures for Placement
University Partnership and Initial Contact
-
Universities initiate placements by contacting the Human Resources (HR) Department.
-
Individual students should not directly contact district staff.
-
Internal employees must notify HR of their intent to seek placement at least one term in advance.
Application and Screening
-
Universities submit placement request forms with resumes, statements of interest, transcripts, and relevant documentation.
-
HR reviews applications for completeness and alignment with district needs.
Building Review
-
Qualified applications are reviewed by building administrators and potential mentors.
-
Evaluations focus on district program availability, professionalism, communication skills, and growth potential.
-
Placement decisions will be communicated to the university or placement office.
Background Checks
-
Background checks are conducted through the candidate’s preparation program as part of the partnership agreement.
Mentor Assignment
-
Building administrators select mentors with at least three years of experience, strong professional practices, and a willingness to provide guidance.
-
Administrators submit mentor nominations via university-provided forms.
Limited Certification and Substituting
-
Student teachers may apply for Intern Substitute or Emergency Substitute certification through HR.
-
Intern Substitute certified interns may substitute only for their mentor teacher.
-
Emergency Substitute certification allows candidates to substitute across the district. However, different preparation programs may have different regulations regarding Emergency Substitute certificates. It is the responsibility of the Student Teacher to confirm eligibility with their program.
Onboarding and Support
-
All candidates must meet with the building administrator, mentor, or other designated building staff member to review policies and expectations.
-
Mentors and administrators provide ongoing feedback, and any performance concerns are addressed through HR and the university.
