• Hello hello VISD Families and Community,

As we stand on the threshold of a new school year, our small island district is filled with anticipation and excitement. Along with our students and families, our building and district office staff have all taken some time away to refresh and are now beginning to prepare for the great year ahead of us. Behind the scenes, our maintenance and custodial teams have worked tirelessly to ensure that every classroom, hallway, and outdoor space is welcoming and in "tip-top" shape for the learning ahead.

This year, we are excited to announce several key initiatives aimed at enhancing the educational experience for all our students. At Chautauqua Elementary School, we are proud to offer free lunch and breakfast to all students, regardless of income status. Good nutrition is fundamental to student learning, and this program ensures that every child starts the day nourished and ready to thrive academically.

At McMurray Middle School, we are implementing a new "Away for the Day" cell phone policy, restricting phone use to the beginning of the day only. This change is designed to help students focus on learning, foster deeper connections with their peers, and reduce distractions during school hours.

At Vashon High School, U.S. News and World Report’s Top Ten School, we are piloting 9th-grade Student-Led Conferences, an initiative that puts students at the center of their own learning. This aligns with the successful model already in place at McMurray and empowers our students to take ownership of their educational journey.

The heart of our schools beats strongest with the support of our families. Whether you reside on our island or commute daily, your partnership is the cornerstone of the collaborative spirit that defines our community. This bond between home and school is vital as we work together to create an enriching environment for all.

We are also profoundly grateful for the enduring support from our local organizations—Vashon Schools Foundation, Partners In Education, PTO, Vashon Center for the Arts, Journeymen, Sisterhood, DOVE, VARSA, Vashon Youth and Family Services, and the Vashon Rotary. Their contributions go beyond resources; they help weave the fabric of a place where education is deeply rooted in the community, creating a unique and vibrant learning environment.

Students, this year, like every year, we begin with a focus on building strong connections. Whether you're starting fresh or returning, our goal is to ensure that you feel a sense of belonging, where your voice matters, and where your potential is recognized and nurtured.

As we open our doors on September 3rd, we do so with a renewed commitment to your academic success and well-being. Together, we will journey through the year ahead, grounded in our Vashon Promise and inspired by the endless possibilities that lie before us.

    With heartfelt gratitude and optimism,

    Dr. Slade McSheehy
