As part of our commitment to enhancing emergency preparedness and response, Vashon Island School District has implemented the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation. This protocol is integrated into our emergency preparedness plan and response procedures.
The SRP framework built upon the concepts and principles already in place within our district, offering greater clarity and consistency in terminology, both internally and in coordination with first responders. By adopting clear and uniform language for emergency response commands, such as hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate, and shelter, along with accompanying directives, we aim to facilitate safer and more effective responses to various emergency situations.

SRP Commands

Hold
HOLD is followed by the directive: "In your room or area. Clear the halls." and is the protocol used when hallways need to be kept clear of occupants.
Students are trained to:
- Clear the hallways and remain in the area or room until the "all clear" is announced
- Proceed with business as usual
Staff are trained to:
- Close and lock the door
- Account for students
- Proceed with business as usual

Secure
Secure is followed by the directive: Get inside. Lock the doors. It is the protocol used when there is a threat or hazard outside of the school building.
Students are trained to:
- Return to the inside of the building
- Proceed with business as usual
Adults are trained to:
- Bring everyone indoors
- Lock outside doors
- Increase situational awareness
- Account for students
- Proceed with business as usual

Lockdown
Lockdown is followed by the directive: Locks, lights, out of sight. This protocol is used when there is a threat or hazard inside the school building.
Students are trained to:
- Move away from lines of sight, such as windows
- Maintain silence
- Not open any doors
Adults are trained to:
- Recover students from hallways or common areas
- Lock classroom doors
- Turn out lights
- Move away from lines of sight, such as windows
- Maintain silence
- Not open any doors

Evacutate
Evacuate may be followed by a directive to a specific location. This protocol is used when there is a need to move people from one location to another for safety reasons.
Students are trained to:
- Leave belongings behind if required
- If possible, bring phone
- Follow instructions
Staff are trained to:
- Lead students to specified evacuation zone
- Account for students
- Notify if missing, extra, or injured students

Shelter
Shelter is the protocol that is called when specific protective actions are needed based on a threat or hazard, such as earthquakes, hazardous material situations, or other localized threats.
Students are trained to:
- Respond to the specific hazard with the appropriate safety strategy. For example, drop, cover, and hold during an earthquake.
Adults are trained to:
- Lead specific safety strategies
- Account for students
- Notify if missing, extra, or injured students
